Frankie of She Must Burn Interview

1. Welcome to LivingTheVanLife, for those who may not know you, can you state your name and your role in the band?
Thank you! My name is Frankie, I am the Bass player for She Must Burn.

2. If your band were to be trapped in a horror movie, what would each member’s role be and who in the band would make it to the sequel?
To be honest, unless we were somehow the cause of whatever horrors lurk in this movie, it probably wouldn’t be too long before we were all dead. I’d like to say I’d make the sequel but I would be the dude that survives to warn the others in the next movie, only to be the first to die in that one. Dan, our drummer would be the muscle regardless of the situation. James would be the fun loving party guy, unless spirits were involved, if so, he would be long gone before the opening credits. I would be the guy that approaches the whimpering figure who is blatantly a zombie to everyone other than me. Jonny would just be cool and Joe would most likely try to lead whoever was left after the first sequence.

3. In three words, how would you describe your band?
Bloody Good Music!

4. You recently released your album, Grimoire, was there a certain song that you were most excited for fans to hear?
Personally, I was excited for “The Wicked.” It was the first song we started on for the album and it really defined the sound for the album as a whole too. It also has Scott from Carnifex featuring on it and he was the first guest we invited to be on it. It also contains the first guitar solo we have recorded as a band. I really love how the music and the lyrics bounce off of each other too. I think the track says a lot about our band due to the amount that went into it before it was released. It’s a track we are all extremely proud of.

5. How would you compare this album to your self-titled EP that you released last year?
We all stand behind this album and say it is definitely a step up from the EP. A big one. It has really shown the evolution of the creative process within the band, amongst other things. We of course still love the EP and love performing the songs live etc, but we can’t wait to add more new material unto our set, it’s absolutely relentless. We really pulled out all of the stops and went all in. It became very clear to us very quickly that we were on the right track. This record sings our heart and soul that’s for sure.

6. If you had to choose one song off the album to show to someone listening to your band for the first time, which song would you pick? Why?
Even though my personal favorite is ‘The Wicked,” I think I could be persuaded to say “After Death.” This contains so many of the elements that I feel define us. It has intricate melodic singing sections, some of the heaviest riffs of the album and it remains, in my opinion, beautiful throughout. The vocal contrasts between Joe and Danielle really shows the side of us that brings something new to the table. It is very unique.

7. What was your favorite memory while either writing/recording the album?
Hearing the tracks come together, I can’t pick an exact moment of the process, but as we listened to each track in their entirety it was almost overwhelming. Every recording process has its ups and downs, it’s a stressful time to say the least, but as things come together and you see what it is you’re actually doing and what it is you are creating, things become much clearer. We spent as much time doing things as individuals as we did doing things together, in terms of recording, not everyone can be around at all times. You don’t want 7 people in a room when tracking guitars, for example, so some changes/additions were introduced to the band for the first time before being finalized. Some of my favorite moments were hearing riffs, or the solo in “The Wicked” for the first time.

8. Is there anything else that you would like to say about the album that you have not yet said?
