ERA 9 Interview

1. Welcome to LivingTheVanLife! For those who may not know you, can you state your name and your role in the band?
Laurie – Vocals
Lalla – Vocals
Joe – Bass
Jona – Guitar
Marco – Programmer/drums

2. If your band were to be trapped in The Hunger Games, how would each member attempt to survive and who in the band would most likely make it to the end?
Jona: I would work as a team and exploit everyone’s skills in order to beat the system!

Joe: I would be up to any challenge. Willing and determined to do whatever it takes until I’d start feeling bad and my naivety would take over. After which, I’d probably be lured somewhere only to be double-crossed and killed brutally with an ax or some other blunt object.

Laurie: I never watched Hunger Games so I would just follow Joe and Jona.

Lalla: I would probably follow Joe and Jona everywhere and hope they’d protect me until we’re the last three. Then, I wouldn’t even put up a fight, seeing as one of them two would be the last one standing, so I’d just let them kill me quick, hoping they’ll at least BBQ me, and garnish me with mushrooms, garlic, onions and olive oil.

3. In three words, how would you describe your music?
Revolutionary, eclectic, melodic

4. Can you talk a bit about how your band started and how you got your band name?
It started when Marco and Jona were in high school and would skip class to play music together; met Joe around the same time. They kept at it and became the ERA9 you know today. We wanted to find a name with meaning, something that defined us as people and artists. The number 9 represents liberty and creativity. We promote open mindedness and creative freedom in this era of music that isn’t limited to one style of listener. Hence ERA9

5. You recently released your single entitled “Warrior,” which premiered on, how has the response been so far?
It’s been great! We’re getting a steady increase of social media follows since then. What’s cool is that many anime content creators in Japan and China are using our song for their AMV videos. You can find them all over YouTube!

6. Can you talk a bit about what the song is about?
“Warrior” is about a man who has been misguided his whole life and realizes that he’s been fighting for all the wrong reasons. He flips the tradition of prideful warfare and adopts the mindset of feeling beneath no one yet superior to no one. The reason he now fights for, is love.

7. The single is off your album, Gravity, that is due out in May, what should fans expect when they hear the album for the first time?
They should expect to be confused or uncertain of what just happened haha! It’s a roller coaster ride of emotions. We took a different approach to our song structures and songwriting. The album is a depiction of the risks we took flipping the world of music as we know it; meshing genres and styles as we felt them. You’ll most likely need to listen to a song more than once to understand it. Once you understand what you just heard; you’ll get it and love it. Trust.
And if not… well… thanks for your time 🙂

8. What was your favorite memory while writing/recording the album?
Jona: My personal favourite memories are when we would all meet up in my home studio room to work on music; but instead we’d make jokes and laugh all night, acting like fools and not getting any work done haha! Those bonding nights that might have felt like wasted work hours, always turned out to spark inspiration; putting your mind in a good place, allowing you to create something we all love as a collective.

Joe: My favourite memory would be any one of the many times where we’d see an initial riff/melody/idea blossom into a full fledged song. Unfortunately, you can’t ever hear something for the first time again; I only wish there was a way to forget the moment so that it can happen all over again haha. So in sum, I guess all you can do is wait until the next one comes along to fuel that emotion again!

Laurie: Mine was when I recorded “Warrior” in their studio as my audition and got chosen!!

Lalla: My favourite memory during the process of the album would have to be when we thought the album was complete, but then Marco showed me an idea he was working on. I got inspired and started writing a song, which we instantly all fell in love with and had to finish writing it together, because we knew it had to be on the album. It’s now called “Bare Bones” and has become one of my favourite songs on the entire album.
