1. For those who don’t know you, can you state your name and your role in the band?
My name is Zach Holley & I play bass in A Story Told.
2. If your band were to be trapped in a horror movie, what would each member’s role be and who in the band would make it to the sequel?
Oh this is a fun one. If we were trapped in a horror movie, I’d have to say that Zach Sallade (guitar) would be the first to go. He’d likely wander away from the pack in search for food early on to his demise. I’m sure I’d be acting like a clown and get killed off in the process of doing something really stupid just for a laugh. Casey (drums) is pretty level headed and would be the mastermind to come up with a plan to get us all out of the mess safety, but Alex (vocals) would likely just step in and use Josh (guitar) as a human shield in order to make it out alive and onto the sequel.
3. How would you describe your band in 3 words?
Buffalo Wild Wings.
4. Here at LivingTheVanLife we have had your latest cover of “Closer” by The Chainsmokers on repeat, what type of overall response have your received since its release?
That’s so awesome to hear! We’re so glad you guys are enjoying our cover! We’ve received a ton of positive feedback from fans, new and old, on the “Closer” cover. It’s so awesome to be able to take a break from playing our normal songs and shift gears a bit in order to work on a fun project such as this. It means a lot when we see people really digging what we’re putting out there.
5. Why did you choose to cover this song?
The main reason we chose to cover this song is because we all genuinely love the song and think it’s an extremely catchy and relatable pop song. We try our best to put some heart and a piece of us into these cover songs that we do and that’s really impossible to do if we aren’t fans of the original song from the start.
6. Your music video for the cover featured Cary Elizabeth Brown performing a dance, can you talk a bit about the music video and perhaps its concept?
With this video, we wanted to promote the idea of nostalgia and revisiting times and places and things that we lose touch with as we grow older. In the video we present a woman revisiting a time and place that she hasn’t been in touch with in a long time, through dance. At first she’s very uncomfortable and it all feels foreign to her, but as the song progresses she becomes more familiar with how she used to dance and all of these fond memories of happiness and joy overtake her. As time moves on, people will obviously tend to change and become invested in new things and ideas. In our video she is dancing to an empty theater, which speaks to how you may no longer be invested in many of the same things you once were as you grow older, but those times will always manifest themselves within you in some shape or form to mold you into the person you eventually become.
7. What was your best memory or favorite moment from either recording the cover or recording the music video?
It’s always such a challenge and a joy to see these projects go from start to finish. When we start recording these covers, they tend to be very similar to the original song and very basic. We all then start adding our own touches here and there to bend and shape these pop songs into something more until we eventually end up with a product that is true to the original but very much our own. As for recording the video, we were very rushed in booking the theater and getting everyone on the same page. Somehow it thankfully all seemed to work out in the end. The entire process was so much fun and we’re all so appreciative to everyone that was involved. We’re extremely happy with how it all came out.
8. Thank you for doing this interview! Before we go, is there anything that you would like to say to the people reading?
We’d love to thank everyone involved in making this project a huge success. As I said, we really love recording covers songs because it’s so fun to do something different and see what we can make of these songs. I’d love to encourage anyone who enjoys our cover of “Closer” to check out and support our brand new album entitled “Keep Watch” that we recently released. We try to travel and tour as much as we’re able to, so definitely keep an eye on our social media pages for dates of when we’ll be coming to a town near you!
